Mastopexy or Breast Lift

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Age, pregnancy, weight gain, weight loss and many other factors can all take their toll on the breasts, causing the breasts to sag, and appear flatter with the nipple elongated and sitting low on the breast. For many patients, a breast lift is an ideal way to combat these changes.

What is the Process for a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is often done in conjunction with breast augmentation to restore your breast shape and nipple position to a more youthful appearance. The addition of an implant may or may not be needed, depending upon your breast size and aesthetic goals. Breast surgery without the addition of implants will not change the size of the breasts or make them look fuller, however, it will add a tighter, firmer appearance to the breasts.

Am I a Good Candidate Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast lifts are also often performed in conjunction with tummy tucks, commonly called “a mommy makeover.” If you have been pregnant or if your breasts are uneven or have lost tone and density because of age or weight loss, you are a good candidate for a breast lift.

After a careful physical exam, your doctor will be able to give you a very accurate idea of what can be done to help you.

A breast lift involves removal of extra breast skin, and the restoration of the nipple to an optimal position on the breast, reshaping the breasts to a more beautiful and youthful form. Typically a breast lift is performed by making an incision around the areola (the pigmented tissue where the nipple sits) as well as an incision going from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease. An additional incision along the breast crease may also be indicated. Your doctor will discuss which incision pattern is suitable for you, depending on the amount of lift desired and the amount of extra skin present.

What Should I Expect With a Breast Lift?

Breast lifts are performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient. When combined with a tummy tuck, an overnight stay is typical. Patients may return to reduced activity within 5-7 days.

Your doctor will discuss pain management with you during the consultation.
