What Can I Do To Get Rid Of My Double-Chin?

8/25/2017

What is a “double chin?”

Excess volume beneath the chin and around the neck also referred to as submental fat, can be extremely tough to target through a typical diet and exercise routine. This stubborn submental fat contributes to what most people refer to as the dreaded “double-chin.” Luckily, at Panacea Plastic Surgery, we offer both surgical and non-surgical options for reducing excess volume and improving our patient’s overall facial profile. Let’s take a look at what these procedures entail!

KYBELLA®: What is it?

KYBELLA® is the first and only FDA-cleared injectable for reducing fat deposits beneath the chin. This specially engineered solution contains deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that contributes to the breakdown and absorption of fat cells. When injected into submental fat deposits, KYBELLA® works to permanently destroy fat cells, which are then eliminated over time through the body’s natural metabolic processes.

What is a KYBELLA injection like?

KYBELLA® is a non-invasive, injectable procedure that’s performed in the office. The procedure from start to finish generally takes about 20 minutes. The number of injections required per session can be anywhere from 10-50, depending on the patient’s volume and distribution of submental fat. Our injection specialists at Panacea Plastic Surgery will work with each patient to determine the optimal number of KYBELLA® treatments they require to achieve desired results. This often means somewhere between 2-6 treatments, each occurring at least one month apart.

KYBELLA Results & Recovery

KYBELLA® is a virtually painless procedure with zero downtime, so patients are free to immediately return to their daily routine. Side effects are minimal and may consist of mild swelling and discoloration around the injection sites for a short time. KYBELLA® injections produce gradual results, and most patients begin to see favorable results following their second treatment.

CoolSculpting of the Neck: What is it?

CoolSculpting  is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that can be used to improve the appearance of your double chin. The CoolSculpting technology freezes away fat cells, that are then broken down by the body.

What is the CoolSculpting procedure like?

During the procedure, the CoolSculpting applicator is applied to a gel pad on the treatment area and begins to freeze the fat cells. As the name suggests you will feel a cooling sensation, but most patients feel a little discomfort. The body then naturally breaks down and gets rid of the cells over time. You will need multiple treatments to see desired results.

Coolsculpting Results & Recovery

The procedure is non-invasive, so you can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. You will start to notice improvement 3 weeks after treatment, final results can take up to 6 months.

When KYBELLA and CoolSculpting are combined the results can be even more dramatic.  Some patients will also add in Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound technology to lift and tighten the skin through collagen production. CoolSculpting and KYBELLA work to reduce the excess fat, while Ultherapy lifts and tightens the remaining skin. All three treatments can work together to give you an extremely powerful non-surgical outcome.

Neck Lift: What is it?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove and tighten excess skin affecting the area beneath the chin and around the neck. This process allows our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons to remove excess volume and create a more contoured facial profile.

What is a neck lift procedure like?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia, sometimes performed in conjunction with a facelift. The specific technique required to eliminate your submental fat may vary, with liposuction requiring a small incision beneath the chin. The surgeon will then manipulate the existing skin and tissue in the treatment area to create a more contoured neck definition.

Neck Lift Recovery & Results

Because a neck lift is a surgical procedure, there is some downtime required. Recovery time will vary from patient to patient, depending on the extent of their procedure. Most patients experience bruising and swelling that begins to subside after a few days, so you should plan accordingly, in the first week or so after surgery. Results will vary, depending on the extent of the procedure, but neck lift results are more dramatic than KYBELLA® results, with many patients looking 10 or more years younger post-surgery.
