When most people think about plastic surgery procedures, what comes to mind is almost always women who are on the receiving end. However, cosmetic surgery is extremely popular with men, too.
What Types of Plastic Surgery Do Men Get?
Men tend to focus on their abdomens, “love handles” (flanks) and chests when considering body plastic surgery. Some of the most popular procedures include:
Gynecomastia Treatment for Men
Gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts, occurs in almost one-third of men. Depending on the patient’s goals, liposuction, excision (removal) of breast tissue or a combination of both can produce excellent results.
Post-surgery, men can expect to have some swelling, bruising and pain. Medication to control discomfort will be prescribed. Initial results are noticeable almost immediately, with final results seen about 3 months after surgery was completed.
Tummy Tucks / Abdominoplasties for Men
Abdominoplasty, also called a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure used to improve the abdominal contour by removing excess skin from the lower abdomen and tightening the abdominal muscles. For men who have experienced weight loss and whose skin hasn’t “bounced back,” tummy tucks can be a great option to help them achieve a slimmer abdomen.
While tummy tucks are incredibly effective, they also require a longer a longer healing time than other plastic surgeries. This is because the incision site is deeper and cuts not just into skin, but muscle as well, so it can tighten muscles that have become loose over time.
Liposuction for Men
Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures for men. It can be performed on almost any area of the body that accumulates lipid or adipose tissue (fat) beneath the skin. Liposuction is especially popular with men who wish to contour their upper or lower abdomen, flanks (love handles) and sides/waists.
Men can expect some bruising, pain and swelling after liposuction, but it tends to start subsiding in a few days, but patients shouldn’t be surprised if it takes 2 weeks for the bruising to settle back down. Final results can be seen between 4-6 months after the procedure has been completed when all swelling has resolved.
Female-to-Male (FTM) Transgender Top Surgery / Mastectomy
Trans men who wish to remove their breast tissue undergo a similar procedure to that of women diagnosed with breast cancer — a mastectomy. Female to male reconstructive top surgery removes breast tissue from the chest, then contours the area to give it a more masculine appearance.
Like with other plastic surgeries for men, FTM patients can expect bruising, swelling and pain for a few weeks, with full results seen around the three-month mark.
Blepharoplasty for Men
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can consist of an upper or lower blepharoplasty or both. An upper blepharoplasty, which is performed by Dr. Abboushi at Panacea, removes excess skin from the patient’s upper lid so that there’s a wider, crisper space. An incision is made in the natural lid crease that is nearly invisible once healed. Additional fat removal may be indicated as well from this region, depending on the doctor’s advice.
Body Lifts for Men
Body lifts are generally performed on men who have experienced massive weight loss, often due to gastric bypass surgery or other weight loss treatments. In these cases, a range of different procedures may be necessary, including a thigh lift, butt lift, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and arm lift (brachioplasty).
Other Non-Surgical Face and Body Contouring Procedures for Men
Injectable Facial Fillers (Voluma, Juvederm, Volbella, Vollure) for Men
Facial fillers for men are injected into areas with facial wrinkles or creases, such as the nasal labial folds around the nose and mouth. Fillers are also used to add volume to areas that lose fat as we age, such as the cheeks, chin and temples. They are formulated to fill and smooth facial lines to give patients a more youthful look without surgery.
Botox Facial Injections for Men
Botox® targets and relaxes facial muscles that can contribute to lines and wrinkles. It is a non-surgical treatment, generally injected into the forehead, between the brows, and near the lateral eyelids to correct “crows feet.”
CoolSculpting ELITE for Men
CoolSculpting ELITE is the newest, fastest and most effective way to freeze away stubborn pockets of fat permanently. Typically, men receiving CoolSculpting treatment choose to use it to remove fat on the abdomen, sides, and flanks, but it can also be used to reduce double chins in some individuals. Since CoolSculpting ELITE is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment, there is no downtime, and patients can go back to work on the same day they undergo treatment.
