Abdominoplasty Vs. Liposuction: Which Procedure Is Right For Me?

7/18/2017

Options for Body Contouring

Whether you are looking to refresh your look after pregnancy or weight loss, or are trying to better contour your body and get rid of that stubborn stomach fat, there are multiple plastic surgery procedures that can help you achieve your goals. Both liposuction and abdominoplasties can remove excess fat deposits and improve your body proportions, but which is right for you?

Liposuction

Liposuction  is the process of removing excess fat from the body and ultimately slimming and reshaping it. It can be performed on most areas of the body, including the:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Arms
  • Neck

A liposuction procedure is performed with mild sedation or general anesthesia and involves small incisions around the treatment area. The plastic surgeon then inserts a long thin tube into the area of concern, and the fat is suctioned out. Recovery is generally short and patients typically return to their usual activities one to two days after the procedure.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasties are commonly referred to as tummy tucks and are designed to improve the contouring of the abdomen by removing excess fat and tightening the abdominal muscles. Women with excess skin after pregnancy, or those with excess skin after significant weight loss, are excellent candidates for this procedure.

A tummy tuck procedure is performed under general anesthesia and involves a small incision that stretches from one hipbone to the other. The incision is usually hidden underneath your underwear or swimsuit line, so the scarring is minimal. Recovery for an abdominoplasty is a little longer than liposuction and will require an overnight hospital stay.

At Panacea Plastic Surgery, we always include liposuction of the flanks (love handles) for free during an abdominoplasty procedure to ensure that you will have the most optimal results.
