How popular is labiaplasty? According to the ISAPS International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery survey, the USA was second in the world in the procedure only behind Brazil.
According to the ASPS from 2015 to 2016 there was a 39% increase in labiaplasty in the US. However, from 2016 to 2017 there was a decrease of 19% (ASPS).
According to a survey performed in Australia. Only 54% of GPs (General Practitioners) felt confident about giving patients adequate advice on labiaplasty.
However, in the same survey, 97% of patients asked those GPs about the opinion of genital normality
Furthermore, 65% of the patients in the survey asked their GP about their opinion regarding female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS).
An interesting study was published in Sex Med reviewed women on several different international websites and online communities. What they found was that emotional discomfort regarding self-appearance and social and sexual relationships were the motivations that were the most frequent and the most prominent for considering labial reduction surgery.
A study published in the Aesthetic Journal of Medicine showed patients had body dissatisfaction, negative genital self-image, and poorer indices of sexual satisfaction at baseline. However, 2 years after undergoing Female Genital Plastic/Cosmetic Surgery their scores had surpassed control values.
In a retrospective study of labiaplasty patients, women reported their motivations for undergoing labiaplasty as follows: 1) aesthetic concerns (87%), 2) discomfort in clothing (64%), 3) discomfort with exercise (26%), and 4) entry dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse) (43%).
Results of the same study showed that 83% found that the results after surgery were satisfactory. 89% were satisfied with the aesthetic result, and 93% approved the functional outcome. 4% would not undergo the same procedure again.
One study in the Annals of Plastic Surgery showed that women with children reported greater satisfaction than women who had never given birth after a labiaplasty.
According to a study in an International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the average length of the labia minora of the women in the study was 20–100 mm with an average of 60.6mm
