Types Of Top Surgery For Transgender And Non-Binary Individuals

4/21/2023

Transgender and non-binary individuals may choose to undergo top surgery as part of their gender affirmation  journey. This type of surgery can help them feel more comfortable in their bodies by altering the appearance of their chest to better align with their gender identity. However, not all top surgeries are the same, and there are different types of procedures that can be performed depending on the individual’s desired outcome.

Gender Affirmation Surgery

Gender affirmation surgery is performed to help an i ndividual’s physical appearance better match their gender identity. This can include several different types of procedures, such as facial feminization / masculinization surgery, bottom surgery, and top surgery. Top surgery is typically done for individuals who want to alter the appearance of their chest to better align with their gender identity. At Panacea, we focus on top surgeries, and have other excellent Atlanta-area surgeons to which we refer our patients who are considering exploring other types of surgeries, including facial surgeries.

Female-to-Male (FTM) Top Surgery

FTM surgery is performed on transgender individuals who are transitioning from female to male. This type of surgery typically involves the removal of breast tissue and the creation of a more masculine chest contour. There are different techniques that can be used for this type of surgery, such as double incision mastectomy or peri-areolar incision.

Male-to-Female (MTF) Top Surgery

MTF surgery is performed on transgender individuals who are transitioning from male to female. This type of surgery typically involves breast augmentation to create a more feminine chest. There are different types of breast implants that can be used for this type of surgery, such as saline or silicone implants, as well as various sizes and profiles.

Non-Binary Top Surgery

Top surgery for non-binary individuals is often chos en by those who identify as gender non-conforming, gender fluid or omnigender. This type of surgery typically involves a customized approach that can alter the appearance of the chest to better align with the individual’s gender identity at any given time. This may involve breast reduction or augmentation depending on the desired outcome.

Chest Feminization and Chest Masculinization Surgery

Chest feminization and chest masculinization are types of top surgeries that are performed to create a more feminine or masculine chest appearance, respectively. These types of surgeries may be completed for both transgender and non-binary individuals, but also for those who do not identify as either but desire a more masculine or feminine appearance.
